The hospital

Launceston General Hospital is a regional teaching hospital and the base hospital for the north and northwest of Tasmania.

We see a large amount of exciting pathology with sadly some of the worst cardiovascular disease burden in Australia. We also have a large farming population with many injuries associated with farm and forestry machinery.

Recently we have had a mass influx of mountain bikers to the state with world class tracks throughout Tasmania. This brings with it some major trauma, often in fit young riders who are keen to cover up how sick they are.
The catchment area is just over 250 000 people, which is half of Tasmania’s population!
